Invent It! Academy is an after school club that aims to enrich your childs STEM education by providing access to teaching staff, materials and literature that supports and deepends their school taught curriculumn whilst also allowing them creative freedom . Invent It! activities will cover a broad range of engineering and science topics such as coding, electronics, physics and mechanics. We use a range of materials including the fantastic Micro:bit platform.
Invent It! Academy sessions run weekly over an academic half term, with each half term booked as a single block. Each session lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes and will take place at the Art-K Studio in Charlton kings. The club is suitable for children ages 8 to 12 years old.
Each session is structured with:
Warming up: this will work on basic problem solving and could be anything from maths to lego!
Introducing:Ā What we are doing, how does it work and who Invented It! The science behind the fun.Ā
Inventing: The making, coding, designing. breaking, fixing, breaking again!
All materials will be provided and each child will just need their imagination and creativity!

Ever wondered how a humble woodlouse moves, senses its surroundings and survives in its environment?
In this hands-on STEM challenge, weāll take a closer look at the amazing world of the woodlouse and discover how nature has solved some clever engineering problems.
Then itās time to become inventors! Using biomimicry, weāll take inspiration from the woodlouse to design and build our very own fully functioning robot woodlouse.

Can you turn one of natureās simplest creatures into an ingenious robot?
Although we have run Invent It! sessions from various places over the years, currently all sessions are run from the art-K workshop in Charlton kings unless otherwise indicated.
The session will be run by Rich Gray, an experienced engineering professional with considerable experience in teaching STEM topics to KS2 and KS3 students. Rich holds a Paediatric First Aid and Designated Safeguard Lead qualifications and is a STEM ambassador. Ā Rich may be supported by a classroom assistant to provide a better teaching experience. All teaching staff hold an enhanced DBS certificate.
Trial sessions are available for the cost of a single lesson (Ā£18). However, booking of these places will be released after the initial course booking goes live to allow any full time places to be allocated first.Ā
Whilst no prior experience is required, the children will need to have enthusiasm and interest in STEM topics to get the most from the coursesĀ
Of course and actively encouraged! It has been fantastic to see about a 50/50 split in classes so far and they often make the best inventors!
The teaching ratio is a minimum of 1:8 staff to student ratio and a maximum of 12 in a class.
Many of the materials used in Invent It! will involve expensive items such as motors, buzzer, robots, microbits and so it is not normally feasiaible for children to take these home with them. When this is the case, please speak to staff member to be able to view their creations at collection
There is a minimum age of 8 years old. This is non-negotiable and is set by our insurance providers.
We don't advertise all our activties. We welcome any ideas or thoughts to brains@invent-it.co.uk about class ideas, class times or other teaching experiences such as 1:1 tutoring, school enrichment and teacher CPD. Please just get in touch!
