🚗Calling All Future Engineers & Racing Enthusiasts! 🚗💚
⭐Join Our All-Girls Team for the Greenpower Formula Goblin Race! ⭐
Are you passionate about racing? Do you want to be part of a ground breaking team that combines speed, teamwork, and innovation? Look no further!
We’re assembling an all-girls team to enter the Greenpower Formula Goblin Race – a thrilling, environmentally-conscious motorsport challenge where young minds design, build, and race electric cars!
Greenpower is a charitable organisation that organises electric motorsport events for various age groups to promote STEM topics and careers. I'm setting up an all girl Y6 team to compete in the 2025 Formula Goblin (ages 9 - 11) competition.
Women are dramatically underrepresented within STEM related professions, and specifically within leadership roles. An all girl Formula Goblin team will provide a valuable opportunity to shift this gender imbalance and inequality.
In short, very little! The budget for the competition is £3000. The majority of this cost is to cover the purchase of the electric car kit from the charity at £2000. Other equipment, materials as well as admin costs such as race entry and insurance make up the remaining costs.
I have been working to get sponsorship and well on the way to securing all of the funds. Part of the project will be to involve the children in the fundraising by engaging with some of the existing and writting letters to some of the new ones (local business) . Whilst I am confident the target can be reached, there is a chance that we will not secure the remaining minimum sponsorship and so the project will not be able to proceed. If this happens then I have some contingency plans and smaller projects for the children to follow instead.
As part of joining the team, I'm asking for £50 to the initial admin cost of setting things up which will be partially refundable. Pupil premium students do not need to pay this.
The team will spend upto half term (17th March to 7th April) gathering sponsorship and designing the car. We will setup the race team and share out roles such as Marketing, Project Manager, race director etc.
After half term (28th April and 19th May + TBD) we will build the chassis, complete the car and then run some tests and practice sessions. On race day, the team will be assessed on a number of course and also the design of their car. The chairity issues rules and regulation around the racing including safety features and equipment which we will abide to when ever we drive the car.
There are multiple Forula Goblin races all around the country. We will be targetting the Renishaw Miskin event on Saturday 31st May 2025, last weekend of half term. The event is about 1:30hr from Cheltenham and I will need some support from parents/ carers to transport the team to the race site.
We will hold a meeitng evey Monday after school at CKJS from 15:20 until 16:30 to progress with the project. I expect we will need some additional/ longer sessions as we get close to race day which will either be a longer Monday evening or a weekend.
The project will span across the SATs period and so I'll work with CKJS to ensure that this project does not impact this in any way. We won't meet during SATs week.
If you think your daugther would like to take part then please complete the online sign-on form below. In this form, there is opportunity to write a brief summary why your daughter will enjoy this activity. This will be used to select the team should it become over-allocated. To get the best from the project, there will be some some small homework tasks (deliver sponsorship letters, car design) shared each week and so please make sure this is achievable alongside their other commitments.
Entries to join the team will be open until 12th March 2025 and the club will start on Monday 17th March at CKJS.
I will be running the club each week and my daughter (Georgie Gray in Y6) will form part of the team. I have run some other STEM activities before (please see the rest of the site). I have a full DBS certificate and will be fully insured.
I'm still fndraising! If you are a business owner and are able to provide sponsorship then there are numerous opportunities for sponsors such as branding on the car, social media recognition, invite to attend the race day, plus photos and video that can be used on websites and newsletters.
Of course, the project will not just benefit from money and if you think your business can offer other forms of donation (materials/ tools/ facilities/ expert talks) then I'd be delighted for you to make any suggestions you think appropriate.
Of particular interst would be any carers/ mums in professional STEM roles or project management/ marketing. Great also to hear from any male carers/ Dads in similar roles and willing to share some time. Maybe someone works at MacLaren?!
